Agency partnerships

What an agency partnerships lead does (and how to structure the role)

7 min read

The short answer

An agency partnerships lead recruits and enables partners, coordinates co-selling and runs joint go-to-market activity. The role builds a partner-sourced pipeline rather than sourcing every deal directly. Agree ownership and measurement for sourced opportunities, influenced revenue and active partners; signed agreements alone do not establish a working channel.

The scope in one sentence

A partnerships lead develops a referral and co-selling channel alongside direct acquisition. Complementary partners can introduce the agency to buyers who already trust them; results depend on fit, enablement and follow-through.

The role needs shared ownership across sales, marketing and delivery. Use the agency selection guide when choosing a delivery partner, and growth services when you need strategy and execution responsibilities scoped together.

The four workstreams that make up the job

Use these four workstreams to define the role and identify responsibilities that need an owner.

  • Recruitment — mapping the partner landscape, prioritising by shared ICP overlap, and signing agreements with clear commercial terms.
  • Enablement — making it genuinely easy for a partner rep to explain and sell your offer: one-pagers, demo scripts, pricing guardrails, a named contact.
  • Co-selling — running joint calls, shared account plans, and handoffs so deals do not die in a referral inbox.
  • Joint go-to-market — webinars, co-authored content, shared events, bundled offers. This is what turns a signed partner into a producing partner.

The KPIs that keep the role honest

Partnerships is the easiest role in an agency to fake busy in. Anchor it to numbers that a CFO recognises:

  • Partner-sourced pipeline — opportunities where the partner made first contact.
  • Partner-influenced revenue — closed revenue where a partner materially affected the outcome.
  • Active producing partners — partners who sent at least one qualified opportunity in the last 90 days. Signed-but-silent partners are not assets.
  • Time-to-first-deal per partner — the honest measure of whether your enablement works.

How to structure the role and its compensation

Choose the scope from your partner model, delivery capacity and existing referral flow—not a revenue threshold alone. A single owner may coordinate recruitment and enablement; larger programmes can separate those responsibilities.

Agree a compensation model with the candidate and define how sourced and influenced revenue are counted. This guide does not provide a verified salary survey or a universal base-to-variable split.

When to hire one — and when not to

Hire when you already have a repeatable delivery motion, clear positioning, and at least a handful of unmanaged inbound referrals you are failing to convert. Those referrals are proof the market wants to refer you; the role formalises it.

Do not hire when your core offer is still changing quarterly, or when your follow-up process leaks. Partner-sourced leads are high-trust and low-volume — losing them to slow follow-up is far more expensive than losing a cold lead. Fix lead routing and follow-up discipline first.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between a partnerships lead and a business development rep?

A BDR sources individual deals directly from prospects. A partnerships lead sources channels — relationships that produce deals repeatedly without new prospecting each time. Different cycle length, different KPIs, different personality.

How long before a partnerships hire pays for itself?

There is no fixed payback timeline. Existing referral flow, partner fit, enablement, sales cycle and deal economics all affect it. Agree leading indicators and review them alongside sourced opportunities and closed revenue.

How many partners should one person manage?

Capacity depends on relationship depth, co-selling support and enablement work. Agree a manageable portfolio and review active participation; partner count alone does not measure a successful programme.
